Cin.Net Spam Filter Info

Due to recent outbreak of Spams that we have gathered, we will be deploying a new Spam filtering system. This filtering system will be in effect on Monday, Feb. 2nd at 12:01AM. We have been testing the system for over 2 weeks now and have about an 99.9% reduction of spam. The only downside of using our new Spam Filtering system is that customers would need to start using IMAP instead of POP3 to check their e-mail.

What is the difference between POP3 and IMAP?

To most customers, POP3 and IMAP has no difference, because either one will allow you to check your e-mail. The major difference is that with POP3, you would download all the e-mails from our server onto your own personal computer. You will be the one that's in-charge of keeping the e-mails sorted. On the other hand, IMAP only download e-mails when it needs to, hence all the e-mail will still be stored on Cin.Net's servers. This would be handy if your computer suddenly crashes, and you need access to an important e-mail.

How difficult is it to switch over from POP3 to IMAP?

For most customers, this should be an easy process. If you had setup your e-mail account before, there are directions attached on the bottom of this e-mail that will help you. But for a handful of customers, we have our trained technical support team that will help you through the process either by bringing your personal computer into our facility or we can help you make the changes over the telephone.

Why would this Spam Filter only work with IMAP?

Actually, the spam filter software will work on any platform, either IMAP or POP3. But we at Cin.Net find it much usable to use IMAP to MANAGE your spam list.

How does this new Spam Filter work?

Whenever you receive e-mail, it will come to our server first. Our mail servers had sorted through millions of e-mails and are trained to pick up e-mails at might be spam. It uses the process of searching for key words inside the e-mail, i.e. Pornographic messages, and also how many times this exact e-mail has came into our system. At this time, it will calculate a percentage of how likely this e-mail is a Spam e-mail. If it determines that it's Spam e-mail, it will be moved into a folder on your own e-mail box called "Spam". After it calculates and moves the e-mail, it will update the database of what it found inside this e-mail. (Basically, learning more and more about Spam E-Mails) Why does this have to do anything with POP3 or IMAP? Well, here comes the problem. What happens if they accidentally move one of your e-mail that you know is a valid e-mail, but our Spam Filter thought it was a Spam? At that time, you would need to drag and drop the e-mail from your Spam folder into your Inbox. Remember, that e-mail needs to stay in your inbox for at least one hour for it to completely replicate into your database system, so future e-mails that resembles that e-mail will be considered good. Vice-versa. If an e-mail shows up in your Inbox, but it's apparently an Spam e-mail, you would need to move the e-mail into your Spam Folder.

If I like to keep a lot of e-mails, how would this affect my mail that's stored on Cin.Net's servers?

Our servers will automatically delete e-mails from your Spam folders that are older than 7 days old. That should give the customer enough time to check the spam folder to make sure that it's doing a good job of catching Spam, and not catching good e-mails. Secondly, our e-mail servers will delete all e-mails that's kept in your Inbox or any subfolders, which are older than 30 days. So it would be a good practice for customers to delete old e-mails or download the e-mails onto their local computer by drag and dropping the e-mails to their Local Inbox.

If I use Cin.Net's webmail service, how would this affect me?

If you solely use our webmail system, nothing much would change for you, expect that you need to check your Spam folder every week or so to make sure that good mail is not in there.

We at Cin.Net know that this might be an inconvenience to some of our customers, and we wish to apologize about this, but we believe that it is important to protect our customers and their family members for receiving unsolicited e-mails. Again, we appreciate your business.

Sincerely,

Cin.Net Engineering Team
