K-9

Brek

The Kewanee Police canine team has been operational since October of 1990.  The team is composed of
officer Chuck Russell and his canine partner Brek.  Brek is a 9 year old male German Shepherd who was
born in Czechoslovakia.

The Kewanee canine team had an immediate impact on crime in Kewanee as the
K-9 team captured a burglary suspect followed by the apprehension of a criminal suspect who fled from
his car into an adjacent cornfield.  After leading police on a high speed chase.  Since then the K-9 team
has been responsible for the capture of more criminals engaged in criminal activity both misdemeanor and
felony.

Since becoming a member of the Kewanee Police Department, Brek has been involved in locating
narcotics in vehicles and in residences where search warrants were executed.  On the street Brek has
indicated the presence of marijuana, cocaine, crack cocaine, and methamphetamine.  Brek has also been
involved in the seizure of thousands of dollars of cash and the seizure of a number of vehicles.  In early 1998 the K-9 team located 110 grams of cocaine, 610 grams of marijuana and thousands of dollars in cash on a routine traffic stop.  The K-9 team also assisted the Illinois State Police just off of Interstate 80 in which Brek alerted on a U-Haul Van which contained 475 pounds of marijuana.

Brek is enjoyed by the many people in the community including school children who watch the K-9 demonstrations.  The canine team brains regularly both independently and with K-9 teams from other law enforcement agencies to ensure the proficiency of the K-9 team.  The Kewanee K-9 team is certified by the United States Police Canine Association.
