Modem Related Problem:
Q: Where can I find a list of modem initialization string for my modem?
A: Click http://www.cin.net/help/modem.htm
Q: Why after I dial, it drops the connection and I have to dial many times before I can get connected? Usually when it makes the connection, it will stay connected , but it usually would take many attempt before the connection can be established.
A: There are few parameters like the modem speed and modem initialization string.
Make sure there is no hardware conflict: Usually, the communication port 1 and 3 are using IRQ 4, and COM
port 2 and 4 are using IRQ 3. If your modem is installed on COM 4, and you have some other
device like sound card, also using IRQ 3, then you have to change the setting on the sound
card to other IRQ or change your modem to different IRQ.
If your computer already has a built-in COM port 1, you should not install your internal
modem on COM 1 at the same time, unless you completely disable the built-in COM port 1.
If you have your mouse system installed on COM 1, you should not install your internal
modem on COM 3 using the IRQ 4. If the mouse is on COM 2, no modem should be on COM 4 with
IRQ 3.
In order for your modem to connection properly with CIN.net, you have to set your modem speed as follows:
Set the right speed: For 14.4K baud modem, set it to 38,400 and for 28.8k baud or 33.6k baud, you may set it to 115,200. Some computers do not have high speed chip set, that would not work reliable if you set it to 115,200, in that case you have to set it to 57,600.
Initialize Modem to Factory Default: Modem of different Make would act differently and would work much better with its factory default string. Use any terminal program and type the following command:
ATZ
AT&F
AT&W0
AT&W1
Q: I have a 28.8K baud modem, why I can only connected at 21,000 or sometime at 24,000 ?
A Connection speed depends on few major factors. The speed that the particular modem can handle, the phone line condition and the modem initialization string.
If your phone line has static noise or the contact is not reliable, you would never be able to get a high speed connection, or even it makes the connection, it will keep re-transmitting due to the error. This would make your actual throughput lower than it suppose to be. Make sure you check this out before you plug in to the modem.
Refer to last Question and answer about the right baud rate setting for different speed of modem to work properly with CIN.net. Also make sure you have the right string for your particular modem. If your modem can not establish the connection at the same speed each time you dial to CIN.net, please try the step : INITIALIZE MODEM TO FACTORY DEFAULT. If you still have problem, please contact tech support.
Q: My modem kept on disconnect me after it was connected. Why?
A: Please check the following before you call for tech support.
There are many reasons that would cause this to happen:
(1) If you have CALL-WAITING feature on your phone line, you must disable it by adding *70
code before your dialed number, or else anyone who makes phone call to your number while
your are using the modem would make your modem to drop the connection from the server. For
Windows 95 or Windows 98
users, please click here for details.
(2)Make sure your phone line condition is good, without any static noise. If so, you have
to correct it first.
(3)The modem initialization string or the proper modem type is selected. Wrong modem
string would make the modem to send retrain packet repeatedly and re-transmit the same
packet which would be treated as unreliable line condition and the connection would be
dropped due to too many errors detected.
(4)Make sure that you are not double login with your account name. If you let other people
use your account and login with your name at the same time, both connections will be
dropped by the system.
(5) Baud rate was not set correctly, do not set it and limit to connect at certain speed,
since some times due to the line quality, it would be better to let it connect and
transfer at lower speed than drop the carrier.
(6) Communication port speed and buffer. Some computer would not handle the 115200 speed properly.
It is better to set it to 57600 if you use 28.8k or 33.6k baud modem.
Some tricks on installing modem
In Windows 95, if you select to have win95 to search for your modem type, sometimes it would not work properly. In such case, it is recommended to re-install the modem by selecting "STANDARD MODEM" and set the proper speed. When you select to do so, make sure you reconfigure the TCP/IP by deleting the DIAL-UP ADAPTOR and reinstall it in order the new installed modem driver would take effect.
Q: I have no problem with my modem when I surf the net but it keeps on dropping the connection while I was composing mail on line. Why?
A: When you are doing the surfing on the net, the modem has data flow in both directions, however, when you are composing the mail on line, a lot of case you are not sending any data through the modem till you start sending the mail. Some modems have the feature that it could automatically drop carrier after certain length of idling. If you did not disable the time out feature, please check your modem manual to find out the proper string to disable the time out feature.
Q: Every time after logon to the net, the computer checks the mail and then the modem drops the connection.
A. It is very possible that you have mark to
drop connection after checking mail in your mail program.
In the Outlook Express, it has to be unchecked. (on Outlook screen, go to
TOOLS, OPTION, CONNECTION)
Uncheck the box at "Hang up after sending and receiving".
